Practitioner:
Lois Faye Singer, B.A., DSPA, S-LP(C), OSLA, Reg. CASLPO #2306, is the founding director of the Voice Laboratory & Treatment Centre of Ontario Associates. Lois holds advanced degrees in Speech as well as Speech Pathology and Audiology, and has received numerous recognitions, including the Honours of the Association from the Ontario Association of Speech Language Pathologist and Audiologists.

After beginning her career as a Speech Therapist for Disturbed Children, Lois progressed to the position of Senior Staff Speech Pathologist at Montreal Children’s Hospital. There, she took on the role of Project Director for the Cerebral Palsy Pre-School, and for a program investigating “The Development of a Linguistic Screening Test for Brain-Injured Children.” In 1977, Lois moved her significant expertise to Toronto and began work as Chief of the Department of Speech Language Pathology, and of the Voice Laboratory, at St. Michael's Hospital and Lecturer for the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Toronto.

In the last ten years Lois became fascinated by the correlation between frequency of speech recognition program use and symptoms of vocal fatigue. The first reports of difficulties arising from the use of speech recognition programs began around 1996, and in 1997, Lois published on the “Potential Problems Associated with the Use of Speech Recognition Products” in the Journal of Assistive Technology. The “Singer Signs and Symptoms of Vocal Fatigue for Speech Recognition Users” were first presented in 1999, at a workshop held by IBM. These “Singer’s Signs” were also recently published in “The RSI Clinic Handbook: Life Beyond the Carpal Tunnel,” and are widely regarded as one of Lois’ most significant contributions to the field.

Lois has also been featured on CBC Radio’s “Quirks and Quarks” question forum, and acted as the course director for a voice conference on the “Clinical Management of Voice for Children and Adults in the Age of Technology.” Today, Lois remains committed to helping patients improve their health and comfort through her active practice.mailto:loissinger@rogers.comhttp://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=10+Foursome+Crescent,+Toronto+ON+M2P+1W2&sll=43.750353,-79.397265&sspn=0.01161,0.025835&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=10+Foursome+Crescent,+Toronto+ON+M2P+1W2&sll=43.750353,-79.397265&sspn=0.01161,0.025835&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1http://www.heathertickmd.com/books.htmlhttp://www.heathertickmd.com/books.htmlshapeimage_3_link_0shapeimage_3_link_1shapeimage_3_link_2shapeimage_3_link_3shapeimage_3_link_4
